Data collection: Complete

Youth baseline data collection began in the fall of 2004 and continued into the summer of 2005. A total of 881 participating youth completed a baseline survey; 804 (91%) of whom also completed the end-of-program survey. The youth participant baseline survey and the youth participant end-of-program survey are now available for review.

The youth participant follow-up data collection was finalized in October 2006. The six-month follow-up survey was completed by 672 (76%) program participants, and 601 (68%) of the youth completed the twelve-month follow-up survey.  A total of 81 (97%) Program Provider and 51 (97%) Organizational Representative interviews were conducted.  The community level data collection was finalized in December 2006 resulting in the completion of 94 (78%) Community Leader interviews and local ordinance data collected for all 73 counties served by the participating programs.

All of the data collected during the Phase II program evaluations are being prepared for analyses.  As publications and presentations of this data become available, they will be included on the Publications page of this Web site.

Program selection: Complete

During the winter of 2004, HYSQ Phase II began recruitment and selection of programs. The primary goal of the Phase II program recruitment was to encourage a large and diverse set of youth tobacco cessation programs from across the country to apply for participation in the HYSQ evaluation. Through a tiered national recruitment strategy, HYSQ opened the web-based application to all youth cessation programs. The recruitment and selection process of Phase II is outlined in the poster presentation, Helping Young Smokers Quit: Program Recruitment for Evaluation.

During a 9-week period (March 15–May 15, 2004), HYSQ received 107 applications. Applications were reviewed for basic eligibility criteria, geographic region of the country, community demographics as defined in the Phase I stratification criteria, youth recruitment strategy (mandatory or voluntary), and externally developed vs. internally developed program materials to select 82 semi-finalists. Structured interviews were conducted via conference call with the semi-finalists. This process resulted in the final selection of 42 program sites in 18 states across the U.S.
